Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP leaders like Amit Shah had expressed confidence that the party alone would secure a majority. However, election results indicated the BJP fell short of a majority, now relying on the NDA to form the government. The BJP won 240 seats, while the NDA as a whole secured 293 out of the 543 Lok Sabha seats.

The INDIA bloc showed strong performance, winning 232 seats with the Congress securing 99 of those. Significantly, the INDIA bloc also won the majority of seats in Uttar Pradesh, where BJP governance was challenged.

In Uttar Pradesh, Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav, referred to as “UP ke ladke,” showcased a robust alliance, winning 43 seats compared to the NDA’s 35 seats.

In southern India, the BJP aimed to expand its influence but failed to win any seats in Tamil Nadu. The Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Mamata Banerjee, also outperformed expectations by winning 29 seats, leaving the BJP with 12 seats in that region.

The term of the 17th Lok Sabha concludes on June 16, 2024.
