A family celebrating their daughter’s 18th birthday on Wednesday was plunged into shock and grief when her 23-year-old techie brother, Yeshwanth B, was allegedly stabbed to death by their father during a domestic dispute at their residence in JP Nagar‘s Jaraganahalli, South Bengaluru. Yeshwanth, the only son of the accused, Basavaraju (53), was working in a private company on Sarjapura Main Road, reporterd Times of India.

Basavaraju, who works as a driver of a mini goods vehicle, is originally from Huliyurdurga in Kunigal taluk, Tumakuru. Preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the incident occurred around 9:30 am in their first-floor house. Basavaraju and his wife, Bhagyalakshmi, often quarreled over taking care of Basavaraju’s 75-year-old bedridden mother and other minor issues.

On the day of the incident, Basavaraju’s younger daughter, Pavitra, a first-year college student, was celebrating her birthday. She was taking photos with her parents and brother when Basavaraju asked her to take a selfie with her grandmother and send the photos to his younger brother, who works abroad. This request led to an argument between Basavaraju and Bhagyalakshmi. During the fight, Basavaraju threatened to kill Bhagyalakshmi if she continued to argue with him. When she challenged him, he fetched a kitchen knife and moved towards her.

Yeshwanth, who was getting ready to go to work, intervened and pushed Basavaraju away from his mother, reminding him that he was financially supporting the family and urging them to stop fighting over trivial issues. Enraged by being pushed, Basavaraju stabbed Yeshwanth in the chest.

Yeshwanth began bleeding profusely, and his parents rushed him to the hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. A senior police officer stated that they secured Basavaraju at the hospital shortly after being informed about the incident around 10:15 am. The police then took Basavaraju back to the house and recovered the knife. Basavaraju has been arrested and a murder case has been registered.(inputs from TOI)
