As temperatures in much of the Northern Hemisphere rise, the US is facing temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit and the number of heat wave warnings has only increased. This is more pronounced in the South-West of the country. This has also led to an increase in the number of heat stroke victims. When the situation was getting out of control with frequent deaths, the authorities came up with a unique solution. The firefighters are immersing the victims in ice while taking them to the hospital for treatment.Temperatures in Phoenix in the state of Arizona have gone beyond 110F and are becoming unbearable for many especially the vulnerable sections of the population. The Phoenix Fire Department hopes that immersing the victims in cold water and ice will help them revive the victims.
In 2023, over 645 people in Maricopa County which is home to Phoenix and many of its suburbs died due to exposure to heat and increasing heat waves. This was an increase of 52% as compared to the previous year. The authorities were able to revive an individual by adopting this technique.

How does this technique help?

This is common among those who run marathons and defense personnel operating in humid and dry conditions across the world. This technique involves packing ice cubes inside an impermeable blue bag around a patient’s body.

This results in an immediate reduction in the body temperature of an individual. A victim of heatwave experiences high body temperatures which suck out the essential liquids of the human body and also vital minerals and vitamins. The revival of the individual is of utmost importance in this case.

The average body temperature of an individual is 37 degrees Celsius.

Increasing Summertime temperatures

The South-Western states of the US are experiencing massive heatwaves. On Tuesday, Bullhead City (41.1C) and Phoenix (40C) in Arizona, Las Vegas (39.4C) in Nevada were recorded. In the state of California, Furnace Creek (44.4C), and Needles (42.2C) recorded the highest temperatures. A Heatwave warning has been issued for California, Nevada and Arizona.
