After the spotted lantern flies and the cicadas, the Northeast U.S. is bracing for another invasion. This time it may be giant venomous spiders with 4-inch-long legs that can parachute through the air. New Jersey Pest Control has warned of the incoming spiders and alerted that Joro spiders will be “hard to miss” as females are known for their vibrant yellow and grey bodies, reports ‘The Mirror US‘.

These states may be their targets

The pest control department has warned that the eastern U.S states of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, the Carolinas, Tennessee, Kentucky Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and Ohio are most likely to be invaded by hundreds of thousands of these animals. Talking to ‘The New York Times‘, University of Georgia researcher Andy Davis said that New York appears to be “right in the middle of where they like to be.”
In a clear warning to these states, Jose R. Ramirez-Garofalo, an ecologist at Rutgers University’s Lockwood Lab and the President of Protectors of Pine Oak Woods on Staten Island, told SI Live that “it is a matter of when, not if” the spiders arrive in New York and New Jersey.

“Arachnids are native to Asia”

In a report published earlier, Invasive Species Expert David Coyle said that the arachnids are native to Asia, they somehow reached north Georgia around 2010, and they are spreading quickly to a vast area. He also said that their comfort area in their native range matches up very well with much of North America.

Coyle has also said that the arachnids are venomous, but they do not pose a danger to humans. It is lethal for critters that get caught up in their webs, including butterflies, wasps and cockroaches.
